‘Kharai’ breed of camels is quite famous in Kutch, Gujarat. Their special thing is that they have the ability to find their food not in the desert, but in deep water. Their main food is a plant called cher, to get which they even cross the ocean. Let us tell you that this species of camel has also received national recognition.

This breed of camel is found in the coastal villages of Kutch. They eat vegetation present in the sea, and can easily travel up to 3 kilometers in deep water without any human help. This Kharai species of camel found in Kutch is seen in the sea bay area till Vondh, Surajbari, Ambaliyara, Jangi.

Their numbers are decreasing

According to media reports, the number of this species of camels was 4,000 in the year 2012, which has now come down to less than 2,000. The reason behind this is considered to be the cutting of cher vegetation, which is the favorite food of camels. However, from the local people to the forest department and some organizations are also working continuously for their care and protection.

There is a lot of demand for camel milk also

Camel milk is also used extensively in these areas. Many food products are prepared with its help, and their consumption is considered very beneficial from health point of view. This is the reason why this camel milk is in great demand from the local people as well as the surrounding areas. People have a belief that by drinking it, diseases like epilepsy, diabetes and even cancer can be avoided.
