Dark circles around the eyes, which we call dark circles, are often considered a sign of lack of sleep. We consider dark circles to be an eclipse on our beauty, but do you know that they can reveal some secrets related to your health. In this article, we are going to talk about this only. Let’s know what problems related to health dark circles can indicate.

What are dark circles?

Dark circles are the color of the skin under both eyes being darker than your normal color. There may be many lifestyle reasons behind this, which are usually not a cause for much concern, but sometimes they can also be a sign of a medical condition. Their color can be brown, black or purple, depending on your natural skin color.

What can dark circles be a sign of?

  • Anemia- Due to iron deficiency, red blood cells in the body decrease, which is called anemia. Due to this, oxygen does not reach every part of the body in sufficient quantity. This can also cause dark circles under the eyes.
  • Thyroid – Thyroid condition can occur due to the thyroid gland not releasing hormones properly. In this, either the thyroid gland starts releasing more thyroid hormone or less than needed. This condition can also cause dark circles.
  • Vitamin deficiency– Dark circles can also occur due to lack of vitamin-B, vitamin-K, vitamin-E and vitamin-D in the body. Therefore, if dark circles persist for a long time, contact the doctor and get the vitamins tested.
  • Dehydration- If you often drink less water than you need, then this can also cause dark circles.
  • Hyperpigmentation- Hyperpigmentation can occur due to being in the sun for a long time without sunscreen or sun protection. This is due to the formation of high amounts of melanin.
  • Dermatitis- Dermatitis can also cause dark circles under the eyes. Actually, it is a skin condition, in which there is dryness, redness and inflammation in the skin. Because of this, the blood vessels near the eyes become dilated and appear on the skin.
  • Allergy- Sometimes dark circles can also occur due to allergies like hay fever.
  • Other reasons – Factors like frequent rubbing of eyes, genetics, increasing age, premature aging, stress, deep eye sockets, smoking, can also cause dark circles.

How to reduce dark circles?

  • Eat a healthy diet. Include colorful vegetables, fruits, whole grains, fish, yogurt, etc. in your diet and reduce the amount of processed foods. Also, reduce the amount of salt and sugar in the diet.
  • Get at least 8-9 hours of sleep every day. Both eyes and skin will feel fresh when sleep is complete.
  • Drink plenty of water. Along with this, you can also drink drinks like coconut water, buttermilk so that there is no shortage of water in the body.
  • Keep the skin near the eyes moisturized. Use petroleum jelly or moisturizer for this. Apart from this, you can also use retinol or algeic acid by asking your doctor.
  • Don’t forget to apply sunscreen before stepping out.
  • Do not drink alcohol and do not smoke as well.
  • Facial massage can be done. This improves blood circulation and can reduce dark circles.
  • If dark circles persist even after lifestyle changes, contact your doctor.
