February brings with it the season of love. This month is especially important for forest birds. This month commemorates Rose Day, Chocolate Day, and, most notably, Valentine’s Day. Couples repeat their love vows, exchange gifts and flowers, swear to always be together, and discuss breaking the moon and stars for one other. We often compare our love to that of Laila-Majnu and Romeo-Juliet, but did you know that in the actual world, some people have given money, fame, and power, as well as the royal throne, for love? Today we’ll tell you an amazing story about one such person, who was once the King of England.
King Edward VIII and Wallis Simpson
This narrative not only set a new standard for love but also caused a stir in the power structure of England. King Edward VIII was the oldest son of King George V of the United Kingdom and Queen Mary. Following the death of King George in 1936, King Edward assumed control of England. His full name was Edward Albert Christian George Andrew Patrick David, and he subsequently became known as Edward VIII. He was King George VI’s elder brother and the father of Queen Elizabeth II.
He may have been ruling England, but he was in love with an ordinary woman named Wallis Simpson. At that time, no member of the Royal Family was allowed to marry someone who was already married or divorced. A similar issue was with King Edward VIII and Wallis Simpson. Wallis was not only an ordinary woman but she was already married.
The first meeting took place in 1931
They initially met at a party in 1931. King Edward was a prince at the time, and Lady Furness, his mistress, hosted this celebration at Behroz Court in England. Wallis Simpson, Ernest Simpson’s wife at the time, also attended this gathering. This was Wallis Simpson’s second marriage, and she had been living in England for a while, yet her statement made it plain that she was American. She and Prince Edward had their first meeting at this celebration. They started meeting more often after that. Wallis Simpson asked the Prince to his house for dinner, following which the two became close and met.
The growing closeness between the two became visible to everyone, due to which many questions began to arise. Although the Prince tried to hide his ongoing affair with Wallis Simpson, it was too late. Despite growing suspicion in people’s minds, Edward continued to invite Wallis Simpson to Buckingham Palace on many of his eleven occasions. The Prince also gave many gifts to Miss Simpson, which started converting people’s suspicion into belief. The Prince had also given some gifts which were the heritage of his family.
Prince became King Edward in 1936
On one hand, their love was blossoming and on the other hand, King George V was taking his last breaths. In 1936, King George V died and Prince Edward was crowned Monarch of England. Love between a king and a married woman was no less than a disgrace for the royal family. King Edward refused to hide their relationship, despite Wallis Simpson’s request.
Wallis Simpson was not only married but she had previously been divorced. This is why the people of England, the Church, and those in authority were unable to absorb the situation. When King Edward VIII declared his plan to marry Wallis Simpson, he encountered strong resistance. Seeing the opposition, King Edward even suggested a morganatic marriage to Wallis Simpson. This is a marriage in which the wife has no royal rank and her children cannot become heirs. However, this marriage proposal did not receive permission. In the end, King Edward was left with just two options: sacrifice his love or give up his regal throne to Wallis.
King Edward VIII shocked the world by rejecting the throne of England and choosing his love. Wallis Simpson also divorced her husband. Edward and Wallis then got married in France. This was a major event in the history of England. After this, his younger brother Albert, later known as King George VI, was declared King of England, and Edward VIII was given the title of Duke of Winster.
