What is a solar storm?
A solar storm is intense electromagnetic radiation emanating from the Sun, which emanates from the Sun’s atmosphere. This also happens due to coronal mass ejection. According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, a Coronal Mass Ejection (CME) is the large ejection of plasma and magnetic fields from the Sun’s corona. CMEs travel outward from the Sun at speeds ranging from as slow as 250 kilometers per second (km/s) to as fast as 3000 km/s.
The fastest Earth-bound CMEs can reach our planet in 15-18 hours. Slow CME may take several days to arrive. As they spread away from the Sun, their size increases and large CMEs can reach about one-quarter the size of the space between Earth and the Sun by the time they reach our planet.
