The Rwanda Migration Bill aims to remove legal barriers to deporting illegal immigrants in the East African country.

British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has got a big relief on Rwanda’s migration policy. The Rwanda Migration Bill has been passed in the British Parliament. According to media reports, all MPs from Prime Minister Sunak’s Conservative Party voted in favor of the government’s Rwanda Migration Bill. Of the party’s 313 members in the House of Commons, 269 voted in favor of the bill and it was passed with a majority of 44 votes. At the same time, 38 MPs from the Conservative Party did not participate in the vote, including the sacked Home Minister Suella Braverman and the resigned Britain’s Immigration Minister Robert Jenrick.

Earlier, Prime Minister Sunak had launched a campaign to gain the support of Conservative Party MPs, as several Tory MPs threatened to oppose the bill. The bill aims to remove legal barriers to deporting illegal immigrants in the East African country of Rwanda.

Ahead of the initial round of voting on the bill on Tuesday, PM Sunak hosted a breakfast for right-wing members of the party who are opposing the bill because they feel it does not go far enough to survive legal challenges. However, moderate Tory MPs are against a further tightening of the harshest anti-immigration laws yet, threatening to jeopardize Britain’s human rights obligations.

PM Sunak passes the test within his party

With opposition parties voting against the bill, Conservative Party rebels either voted against it or abstained during voting on a motion moved in opposition to the bill on Tuesday night. With this, PM Sunak passed the test within his party. Besides, his hold on the party also seems to be getting stronger.
