The Pakistani city of Lahore remained one of the most polluted major cities in the world for the second consecutive day. Pakistan’s second-largest city is facing a smog crisis. The Air Quality Index (AQI) remained at an alarming 470, followed by 302 in Delhi and 204 in Karachi. According to Dawn, vehicle emissions, industrial pollution, and smoke caused by crop burning have reached dangerous levels.

The air in Pakistan as well as India has turned exceedingly toxic. The pollution in both Lahore and Delhi, the nation’s capital, is remarkably similar.

Lahore

With unfavorable air quality levels all day on Thursday, November 16, Lahore remained at the top of the world pollution rankings, according to Dawn. There is a smog crisis in the second-biggest city in Pakistan. This could have an impact on the livelihood and health of millions of people.

These factors caused the air quality to reach a dangerous level.

Lahore continues to have the worst air quality in the world, according to IQAir, a Swiss company that develops air quality technologies. The ‘hazardous’ 470 air quality index (AQI) was followed by 302 in Delhi and 204 in Karachi.

Dawn claims that hazardous levels of smoke have been reached as a result of burning crops, industrial pollution, and vehicle emissions. The most dangerous particle, PM2.5, is present in concentrations greater than 15 times the annual WHO air quality guideline value.

Lack of visibility in the city due to fog

The haze has interfered with flight operations and decreased visibility in the city. Due to the poisonous air, many Lahoris have complained of eye infections, skin conditions, and respiratory issues. To avoid the smog, some people have even left the city.

As part of efforts to lessen smog, the caretaker administration of Punjab announced on Wednesday that all public and private offices, including educational institutions, will be closed on Saturday. Following the ruling of the Lahore High Court, the provincial cabinet made this decision.

Smog problem arises every year

The smog crisis in Lahore and Punjab is not a new thing. According to Dawn, it occurs every year in October, November and December. According to IQAir, Pakistan is the third most polluted country in the world and Lahore is the most polluted city.
