MQ-9B Drone Deal: Enhancing Surveillance Capabilities
During their discussions, PM Modi and President Biden finalized a deal for India to acquire 31 General Atomics MQ-9B drones. This deal, valued at approximately $3.99 billion, includes 15 Sea Guardian drones for the Indian Navy and eight Sky Guardian drones each for the Indian Air Force and Army. This procurement is expected to significantly bolster India’s intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) capabilities across various military domains.
The MQ-9B Predator drones are renowned for their stealth capabilities, allowing them to operate at low altitudes—within just 250 meters of the ground—without detection. These drones can reach altitudes of 50,000 feet, achieve speeds of up to 442 km/h, and carry payloads of around 1,700 kg, including precision missiles and bombs. With a range of 2,000 miles and the ability to remain airborne for up to 35 hours, the MQ-9B is a versatile asset for modern military operations.
Strengthening Semiconductor Supply Chains
In addition to defense procurement, Modi and Biden emphasized the importance of semiconductor cooperation. They announced plans to establish a new semiconductor fabrication plant in Kolkata, marking a significant step in bolstering resilient semiconductor supply chains. This facility, named the GlobalFoundries Kolkata Power Center, aims to enhance research and development in chip manufacturing, crucial for next-generation technologies, including AI, low-emission vehicles, and data centers.
The establishment of this semiconductor plant reflects both countries’ commitment to building mutually beneficial partnerships in technology and manufacturing. The collaboration also aligns with India’s efforts to become a global hub for semiconductor production.
Future Collaborations in Defense and Technology
The talks also highlighted ongoing and future collaborations in various advanced domains. PM Modi and President Biden welcomed the teaming agreement between Liquid Robotics and Sagar Defence Engineering, which focuses on co-developing unmanned surface vehicle systems for enhanced maritime domain awareness. Additionally, they noted the recent Security of Supply Arrangement (SOSA), which aims to facilitate the mutual supply of defense goods and services.
Moreover, both leaders expressed optimism about the India-US Defense Acceleration Ecosystem (INDUS-X), launched in 2023, which seeks to drive innovation and collaboration in defense technology. The partnership continues to expand into areas such as cybersecurity, threat information sharing, and energy and telecommunications networks vulnerability mitigation.
Cultural and Economic Exchanges
In a gesture of goodwill, PM Modi thanked President Biden for the return of 297 invaluable antiquities to India. This move underscores the cultural ties between the two nations and reflects a shared commitment to combating illicit trafficking of cultural properties. The leaders also discussed the importance of reforming global institutions to better represent India’s voice, including the push for India’s permanent membership in the UN Security Council.
Significance of the US-India Relationship
President Biden noted that the US-India partnership has never been stronger, stating, “The United States’ partnership with India is stronger, closer, and more dynamic than any time in history.” The ongoing talks between the two leaders are expected to pave the way for even greater cooperation in defense, technology, and trade, reaffirming the countries’ strategic alliance.
PM Modi’s US Visit and Upcoming Engagements
Prime Minister Modi’s visit to the US includes various engagements aimed at further strengthening the Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership. After attending the Quad Summit, Modi plans to address the United Nations General Assembly, where he will focus on global issues and India’s role in international peacekeeping efforts. He will also meet with CEOs from American firms to discuss advancements in cutting-edge technologies such as AI and quantum computing.
A New Era in US-India Relations
The recent discussions between PM Modi and President Biden signify a pivotal moment in US-India relations. As both nations navigate the complexities of global security, their commitment to enhancing defense capabilities and technological cooperation will undoubtedly lead to a more robust and dynamic partnership. With the MQ-9B drone deal and semiconductor initiatives on the table, the future looks promising for both countries as they work together to address shared challenges and opportunities.
