A Tense and Tactical Battle

Both fighters entered the octagon with high stakes. Jones, 37, was fighting for the first time since winning the heavyweight title in March of the previous year. Miocic, 42, hadn’t fought since 2021 and was looking to regain the belt he had once dominated. The opening rounds were closely contested, with Jones displaying his superior striking and grappling. Miocic, however, proved he was still a force to be reckoned with, countering Jones’ attacks and staying in the fight.

As the third round neared its end, Jones found the opening he was looking for. A perfectly timed spinning kick hit Miocic squarely in the ribs, causing him to bend over in agony. Despite his toughness, Miocic was unable to continue, and the referee called a halt to the bout at 4:35 of the third round.

The victory not only marked Jones’ successful title defense but also extended his reign as one of the most dominant champions in UFC history.

Jones Talks Future, Dismisses Retirement

In the aftermath of his victory, attention quickly turned to Jones’ future. Speculation had been mounting that Jones might retire after defending the heavyweight title, but the fighter himself poured cold water on those rumors. Speaking with Joe Rogan in the octagon, Jones said he wasn’t ready to walk away from the sport just yet.

I decided that maybe I will not retire, Jones said, adding that he planned to meet with UFC President Dana White and Chief Business Officer Hunter Campbell to discuss his options. I have some conversations to have with them, and if everything goes right, maybe we’ll give you guys everything you want to see.

Jones hinted at potential matchups with a number of fighters, including interim heavyweight champion Tom Aspinall, who was seated at the event. He also mentioned the possibility of a super-fight against former UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Alex Pereira, a bout that many fans have been clamoring for.

Despite the excitement surrounding those potential matchups, Jones remained noncommittal, stating that he would take his time to discuss his next move with his team.

Miocic Announces Retirement After Loss

For Stipe Miocic, UFC 309 marked the end of his illustrious career in mixed martial arts. After the fight, the former two-time heavyweight champion made it clear that he was retiring for good, acknowledging that the liver shot from Jones had ended his night.

I lost, and it was awful. I was aware that he was among the greatest of all time. arrived with vigor. I felt good. He caught me in the ribs while I was blocking,” Miocic remarked. “I’m finished. I’m going to hang them up. I’m grateful to be retiring.

Jones, ever the respectful competitor, praised Miocic for his toughness and legacy. Regarding Miocic, Jones compared it to battling the Terminator. It’s really discouraging to strike someone who isn’t responding. However, regardless of your level of toughness, the liver is the liver after that body shot.

Trump’s Ringside Appearance and Post-Fight Celebration

The atmosphere at UFC 309 was electrified not only by the action inside the octagon but also by the high-profile guests in attendance. Among those seated ringside were US President-elect Donald Trump, UFC President Dana White, and a number of celebrities, including tech mogul Elon Musk, House Speaker Mike Johnson, and musician Kid Rock.

Trump, a long-time supporter of the UFC, was met with loud cheers as he walked to his seat. Jones, known for his playful demeanor, didn’t miss the opportunity to have some fun with the moment. After receiving his title belt, Jones walked over to Trump, shaking his hand and allowing him to hold the belt. The two shared a brief celebration, with Jones even mimicking Trump’s famous dance moves, much to the delight of the crowd.

Jones’ connection with Trump is well-known, as UFC President Dana White has long been a close friend of the president-elect. Trump has attended several UFC events in the past, and his presence in the arena added a layer of spectacle to the already high-energy event.

It'll come up eventually. 😍

Looking Ahead for Jones and the Heavyweight Division

With his latest win, Jon Jones remains the undisputed UFC Heavyweight Champion. However, questions remain about who will challenge him next. Fans are eager to see whether Jones will face the highly regarded Tom Aspinall or possibly Alex Pereira, two fighters who have the potential to create exciting matchups for the champ.

While Jones’ immediate future in the UFC is still uncertain, one thing is clear: he remains at the top of the sport. Whether he chooses to retire, face new challengers, or take on super-fights, Jones’ place in MMA history is already secure. As the UFC heavyweight division continues to evolve, all eyes will be on the champion to see what’s next in his storied career.
