Like in many states, drums are used to express every happy time. Similarly, in Marwar region of Rajasthan, during Holi, dancing is done on the beats of Chang. In rural areas, on the day of Holi, people are seen dancing and dancing to the beats of this Chang.
Dancing to the beat of Chang is called non-dance
When the beat of Chang is played, people of rural areas sing Phag songs with each other. Everyone dances together, singing songs along with the beat of Chang, a sight which is not seen among the people dancing on the drums in the cities.
How does non dance happen?
When men of Marwar region dance with each other in a round circle on the day of Holi, it is called Gair dance. Whereas those who are non-dancers are called Gariya. There is a costume to perform this dance. In which white dhoti, red, pink, white tunic and saffron colored turban are worn on the head. Apart from this, this dance is also special because in this dance, men tie Ghungroo on their feet and perform this ‘Gair’ dance. This dance has its specialty because it is performed only by men.
