14 people are missing after a ship sank due to storm winds near the island of Lesbos. A navy frigate, three Coast Guard ships, five cargo ships, and helicopters from the Air Force and Navy all participated in the rescue effort. Eight Egyptians, four Indians, and two Syrian nationals make up the crew. The ship had set out for Istanbul from Egypt’s Dekhela.
A Comoros-flagged cargo ship has sunk near the island of Lesbos due to storm surge, leaving 14 people missing. A Greek coast guard said on Sunday that a major rescue operation was underway for those people.
The team engaged in rescue work
According to a news agency, a naval helicopter had rescued a crew member. Five cargo ships, three Coast Guard ships, helicopters of the Air Force and Navy as well and a naval frigate are involved in the rescue operation.
The ship sank with 14 members
The fourteen crew members on board the cargo ship, which was carrying salt, were revealed by the state-run. The news agency reported that it sank early on Sunday, 4.5 nautical miles southwest of Lesbos, citing the coast guard.
Four Indian people also included
The ship had departed from Dekhela in Egypt towards Istanbul. According to the news agency, the crew members include two Syrian nationals, four Indians, and eight Egyptians. Ships were stranded in many parts of Greece on Saturday and wind speeds reached 9-10, which is usually considered a strong gale.
Weather warning issued
An emergency weather warning by the Hellenic National Meteorological Service (HNMS) was upgraded from a worsening weather warning to a hazardous weather phenomenon warning on Saturday, as Storm Olive moved across the Adriatic Sea towards Greece.
