According to a UN Mission in Afghanistan report from October to December of last year, the Taliban is cracking down on Afghan women who are alone or without a male guardian. The Taliban have also shuttered beauty salons and implemented a dress code requiring women to wear hijab.

The Taliban’s cruelty against women is on the rise in Afghanistan. According to a UN study issued on Monday, the Taliban restricts Afghan unmarried women’s access to work, travel, and health care.

Must be married to get a job

In one incident, officials from the Ministry of Vice and Ethics advised a woman that if she wanted to keep her job at a health facility, she would have to get married. Also said that it is inappropriate for an unmarried woman to work.

Many strict rules were made for women

Despite initially promising a more liberal government, the Taliban have since taken control in 2021, enacting a slew of draconian restrictions that prohibit women from most aspects of public life and prevent females from entering education past sixth grade.

Arrest for going out without hijab

The Taliban have also banned beauty salons and begun imposing a dress code in which women are jailed if they leave without wearing a hijab or headscarf. In May 2022, the Taliban issued a decree mandating women to display only their eyes and recommending head-to-toe burqas, similar to restrictions imposed during the Taliban’s previous administration from 1996 to 2001, according to Was.

Women cannot roam without a man

According to a UN mission assessment from October to December last year, the Taliban were cracking down on Afghan women who were unattended or without a male guardian. There is no official legislation in Afghanistan governing male guardianship, although the Taliban have declared that women cannot move or travel a particular distance unless accompanied by a man.

According to the Associated Press, women have also been imprisoned for buying contraception, something the Taliban does not officially prohibit. The ministry has not responded to requests for comment on the United Nations report.
