Oakland District Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers has set February 5, 2024, for the settlement of the case and a formal agreement between the two parties. In 2020, on behalf of all Google users, the law firm accused Google of violating its terms of service.
In America, Google has accepted its mistake in the matter of violation of privacy of millions of users and has settled for 500 crore dollars (40 thousand crore rupees). In 2020, American law firm Boies Schiller Flexner accused Google of violating privacy by monitoring user activities even in incognito mode. Along with this, a suit of 500 crore dollars was filed.
Oakland District Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers, who is hearing the case, has set the date of February 5, 2024, for the settlement of the case and a formal agreement between the two parties. In 2020, on behalf of all Google users, the law firm accused Google of violating its terms of service. Initially, Google kept denying these allegations. Earlier this year too, Google had asked the court to dismiss this case, calling it baseless.
In the last hearing, Judge Rogers, while reading Google’s privacy statement, said, it is a big question whether Google had made a legally binding promise not to collect users’ data when browsing in incognito mode. Citing Google’s privacy policy and company statements, the judge said Google had violated its terms of service.
The promise was made to protect privacy
The incognito mode was promoted by Google saying that it completely protects privacy. However, the law firm quoted many people as claiming that when they searched for certain things in this mode, they immediately started seeing advertisements for related products, which proves that Google and its third-party advertisers track them even in incognito mode. Was doing.
Demand for $5,000 compensation for the user
The terms and conditions of the agreement have not been decided yet. However, in the last hearing, the lawyer of the law firm demanded that Google should give a minimum compensation of $ 5,000 to all the users whose data was tracked. This is the second major case in America this month, in which Google has settled. In early December, Google also settled for $700 million in a case of violation of antitrust (competition) law.
