Cyclone Fengal, currently intensifying over the Bay of Bengal, is on track to make landfall along the Tamil Nadu coast, bringing with it heavy rains, high winds, and a threat of widespread disruption. As the storm approaches, Tamil Nadu authorities have issued urgent warnings and advisories to ensure public safety.
Cyclone Fengal Approaches Tamil Nadu
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicts that on Saturday, November 30, at about 7 PM, Cyclone Fengal will make landfall close to Puducherry. The storm is expected to deliver heavy rains and powerful gusts to Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and the surrounding territories, with wind speeds of up to 90 km/h.
As the storm strengthens, residents of affected districts are bracing for significant weather changes. The cyclone’s trajectory places it between Karaikal and Mahabalipuram, which means coastal areas like Chennai, Cuddalore, and Puducherry will bear the brunt of its impact.
Heavy Rainfall and Red Alert Issued
The IMD has issued a red alert for several regions, predicting heavy to extremely heavy rainfall across parts of Tamil Nadu, southern Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, and interior Karnataka. The red alert is particularly focused on the coastal districts of North Tamil Nadu and South Andhra Pradesh, with Chennai, Kanchipuram, and Cuddalore expected to experience severe downpours.
Dr. S. Balachandran, Director of the Regional Meteorological Centre in Chennai, confirmed that areas between Karaikal and Mahabalipuram will witness maximum impact, including wind speeds up to 70-90 km/h and significant rainfall. The IMD has also warned of possible high tides in coastal areas, exacerbating the risks posed by the storm.

Disruption to Daily Life and Transport
Cyclone Fengal’s impact has already begun to disrupt daily life in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry. Multiple flights to and from Chennai have been canceled or delayed due to poor visibility and dangerous weather conditions at the airport. The Chennai International Airport, which is a major hub, has announced that operations will resume only after 4 AM on Sunday.
In response to the worsening conditions, the Tamil Nadu government has declared that schools and colleges across the state will remain closed on Saturday. Puducherry, which is in the storm’s path, has also suspended educational activities to safeguard students and staff.
Fishermen Warned, Rescue Operations Underway
The authorities have issued a warning to fishermen, advising them not to venture into the sea as Cyclone Fengal approaches. The Fisheries Department in Puducherry has also advised fishermen to move their boats and gear to higher ground to prevent damage from the strong winds and rough seas.
In anticipation of widespread flooding and damage, the Tamil Nadu government has set up relief centers in various districts. As of now, 471 people from 164 families have been moved to safety in Tiruvarur and Nagapattinam. In addition, toll-free emergency numbers 112 and 1077 have been set up, and a dedicated WhatsApp number (9488981070) has been made available for distress calls.
Safety Measures and Precautions
The authorities are advising the public to take precautions in preparation for the storm. Here are some essential safety measures:
- Home Preparation: Secure any loose tiles, shutters, or windows. Remove dead tree branches, and anchor any removable objects like garbage bins or tin sheets that could become flying debris in high winds.
- Emergency Supplies: Ensure you have enough non-perishable food, battery-operated lanterns, and extra batteries. It’s also advisable to stock up on water and keep first aid supplies handy.
- Remain Indoors: Unless it’s absolutely essential, stay inside your house. If you have to go outside, watch out for flooding and downed power lines.
In a dire situation, it’s important to remain in a safe shelter until authorities confirm that it is safe to return home.
Fatalities and Injuries: A Grim Update
Unfortunately, Cyclone Fengal’s impact has already led to tragic incidents. A man in Chennai was electrocuted and found dead outside an ATM in a waterlogged area, as reported by the police. The cause of the electrocution is believed to be fallen power lines in the flooded area. This incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of floodwaters, which can be charged with electricity.
Earlier this week, as Cyclone Fengal skirted the coast of Sri Lanka, it caused the deaths of at least 12 people, including six children. The storm’s slow-moving nature and its prolonged presence in the Bay of Bengal have made it particularly dangerous, with authorities on high alert to mitigate further loss of life.
Emergency Response and Rescue Operations
The Greater Chennai Police have been actively engaged in rescue operations, responding to emergency calls related to fallen trees, waterlogging, and trapped residents. Over the course of the day, the police have rescued multiple senior citizens stranded in inundated areas of the city.
In one case, the Vepery police rescued a 60-year-old woman named Samanthi, who was found ill and abandoned in her home. She was provided food and taken to the Kilpauk Medical College Hospital for treatment. Similar rescues were carried out in other areas, including K.K. Nagar, where elderly individuals were relocated to safer locations.
The Ongoing Impact
Cyclone Fengal, although now making landfall, is expected to continue influencing weather conditions across southern India for the next few days. Even after making landfall, the storm is predicted to weaken into a deep depression, but it will continue to fuel active weather systems over Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and other affected areas.
The ongoing rains and wind are expected to persist until December 2, with weather conditions gradually improving only afterward. Meanwhile, coastal regions and urban centers like Chennai will need to brace for further disruptions, including power outages, flooding, and transport delays.
Cyclone Fengal has intensified into a dangerous storm, leaving Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and parts of South Andhra Pradesh in its path. The coming hours will be crucial as the cyclone makes landfall, with authorities closely monitoring its progression. Residents are urged to stay informed through official channels, take necessary precautions, and remain in safe shelters until the storm passes.
