WhatsApp is apparently working on a new feature that might shield your data from online scammers. The new feature is called “block messages from unknown accounts,” according to WABetaInfo.
The purpose of the “block messages from unknown accounts” option is to prevent messages from accounts that you do not know from being sent to you. The capability is currently unavailable to the general public.
What’s the update
WhatsApp wants to shield its users from spam, according to feature tracker WABetaInfo. Over the past few days, there has been an increase in concern around frauds utilizing WhatsApp and other online schemes.
A cybersecurity platform called CloudSEK revealed a few days ago that an Android WhatsApp user is the victim of a spyware called “Maorrisbot.” However, what is this spyware and how is your phone being affected by it? False WhatsApp messages posing as traffic tickets can propagate Maorrisbot. Subsequently, these messages ultimately deceive individuals into downloading a harmful application. The study also included information regarding the further deployment of the new virus known as “Maorrisbot” by Vietnamese hackers. In order to protect themselves, WhatsApp will roll out a feature that lets users restrict messages from unknown contacts.
The feature tracker went on to say that the function will automatically block messages, much as the current “block unknown callers” functionality. There is a twist, though. The unknown sender is blocked by the new feature if it above a “specific limit.” But it’s unclear exactly what this “specific limit” means.
Other updates
Protecting the user against potentially hazardous material, including malicious links or text and phishing efforts, is the primary goal. The functionality will also prevent the “unlimited” spam mails that we frequently receive in addition to this. Many of us have experienced the moment where an overwhelming amount of spam caused our gadgets to slow down. Additionally, the new feature will enhance the functionality of our gadgets and assist avoid that.
WhatsApp further wants to give its consumers a more seamless experience. The current “block unknown callers” feature will be improved by the new addition. Additionally, by updating the algorithms that identify suspicious activity in your WhatsApp account and needless bulk messaging, it can provide an additional degree of protection.
Spam protection
Similar to the current “Block Unknown Callers” option, the new feature would reportedly automatically block texts from unknown senders, according to a report from WABetaInfo. The way it is implemented differs slightly, though. The study states that when an unknown sender’s message volume above a certain level, it is banned.
The intention is to shield users from unwanted material that might be harmful, such as malware messages and phishing efforts that could impair device storage and performance.
The feature I anticipated would not only increase user security but also improve device performance by lowering the amount of spam messages that ultimately use up more system resources and degrade the speed of the app.
The formal launch dates for the feature are still to be announced by WhatsApp. It may take some time before it is made available to the public since it is reportedly still in the testing phase.
