Taliban Secret School: In 2021, Taliban took over Afghanistan and since then the life of women has become worse. Many strict steps have been taken ranging from not allowing girls to go to school to the rules regarding women wearing clothes.
At first, the authoritarian group forbade female students from attending high school. Girls were then banned from attending primary school in December 2021. These restrictions were widely condemned by Western governments and human rights groups around the world.
Underground school being run by Taliban
Despite the Taliban’s education ban, more than 600 Afghan women and girls have refused to bow down to these fundamentalists. According to a report by ABC News (American Broadcast Corporation), Taliban women are busy completing their studies without any fear. An unregistered NGO called SRAK is being run by 25-year-old Parasto. This NGO is in the underground where a secret network school is being run.
In an interview with News, Parasto said, ‘The fall of Kabul was not an easy thing for us, the younger generation, especially those who were educated and had dreams, but now everything is over. I saw on TV that girls were coming out of schools and crying and they were asked to go back to their homes. It was devastating.
Parasto said she couldn’t sit at home and watch all this happen, so she opened an underground school of schools for Afghan girls to continue their studies in secret. For teachers he involved his friends. Speaking to the ABC, a 16-year-old student said that going to school makes her happy and she wishes she could spend more time there.
However, in the eyes of the Taliban, these underground schools are illegal. There is always a fear of teachers and students getting caught. The Taliban became aware of a secret school being run inside someone’s house when they started interrogating the owner of the house. It was a matter of relief that when Taliban officials were searching the school, no students or teachers were present there.
Scared, crouching down a way to die
Parasto says that whenever she comes to the underground school she feels scared. However, she also says that giving in to fear is a way to die. Parasto said that when the Taliban started searching the houses, the school had to be closed for some time. Parasto said that if this school is closed then these girls will be forced to get married.
Due to marriage at a young age, she may die while giving birth to a child. There is no access to any clinic here. Parasto said that due to limited resources, underground schools cannot be run for long. Many schools do not have electricity to keep students warm while they study, and many teachers work without pay.
