The 2024 U.S. Presidential Election is shaping up to be a historic showdown between former President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris. As the night unfolds, Trump appears to be on the verge of a landslide victory, with key battleground states falling into his column and the electoral map turning increasingly red.
Early Projections: Trump Leads in Key States
As election results continue to trickle in, Donald Trump has already secured victories in a number of traditionally Republican states, including Kentucky, Indiana, and West Virginia. Meanwhile, Vice President Kamala Harris has been projected to win Vermont, one of the few blue states on the map thus far.
As of now, Trump has claimed 23 states, while Harris has won 11. The race for the White House is ultimately determined by the electoral college, and Trump is leading with 248 electoral votes, while Harris trails with 214. To secure the presidency, each candidate needs at least 270 electoral votes, and with several key battleground states still up for grabs, this race remains incredibly tight.
The Battleground States: The Deciding Factor
Although Trump has a substantial lead, the outcome of this election hinges on the results of seven critical swing states: Pennsylvania, Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, North Carolina, and Wisconsin. These states, which have historically flipped between Democratic and Republican control, will be the key to determining who takes the Oval Office in January 2025.
Currently, Trump has made significant inroads in several of these battlegrounds. Notably, he has already won North Carolina and Georgia, two states that were considered crucial for Harris’ path to victory. Additionally, Trump is leading in Pennsylvania, which has been a pivotal state in recent elections. If the trends hold, the former president could be on the cusp of a decisive victory.
The Mood of the Electorate: State of Democracy and Economy
The election has been fiercely contested, with both candidates campaigning hard on issues that matter most to voters. According to exit polls, the state of democracy, the economy, and abortion rights were the top issues for American voters heading into Election Day.
Nearly six in ten voters said that the state of democracy was their number one concern, with abortion rights also ranking highly as an issue, especially after the Supreme Court’s 2022 decision to overturn Roe v. Wade. The economy, while important, was considered a priority by only about 10% of voters, reflecting the deep divisions in the country on how to handle current economic challenges.
A CNN exit poll revealed a dismal view of the nation’s direction, with nearly three-quarters of voters expressing dissatisfaction with the current state of affairs. Only a quarter of the electorate expressed enthusiasm or satisfaction with the country’s trajectory, while more than 40% said they were dissatisfied, and about 30% admitted to being angry about the direction the U.S. is heading.

Trump’s Strong Showing in Swing States
As more results come in, Trump’s performance in swing states has been impressive. He clinched Florida early on, a state that has become a Republican stronghold in recent years. His victory in Florida, along with other traditionally red states like Texas, South Carolina, and Indiana, has given him a significant edge.
More importantly, Trump has secured crucial wins in battleground states that were once considered toss-ups. His victories in North Carolina, Georgia, and Pennsylvania have put him in a commanding position, with the possibility of clinching the presidency without the need for victories in every remaining battleground state.
As of now, Trump has 266 electoral votes, just four shy of the 270 needed to secure the White House. Harris, on the other hand, has managed to win 188 electoral votes, but her path to victory is increasingly difficult as the GOP continues to perform well in the remaining battleground states.
Harris’ Strongholds and the Democratic Base
Kamala Harris has been able to secure victories in several reliably Democratic states, including New York, Massachusetts, and Illinois. These wins are expected, given the traditional Democratic stronghold status of these states. However, these victories have not been enough to offset Trump’s momentum in swing states and Republican-leaning areas.
While Harris still has a chance to make a comeback, especially if she can win some of the remaining battlegrounds, it will take a dramatic shift in voter sentiment to overcome the current trend in the electoral map. The results thus far suggest that Trump’s coalition of voters—particularly those in rural areas and working-class districts—have turned out in large numbers, giving him a significant advantage in key states.
Republicans on the Rise: Senate Gains for the GOP
In addition to Trump’s strong showing, Republicans are also gaining ground in Congressional races. The GOP has edged closer to winning control of the Senate, with Trump-backed candidates like Bernie Moreno flipping seats held by Democrats. In Ohio, for instance, Moreno successfully unseated Democratic incumbent Sherrod Brown, who had served in the Senate since 2007. Another Republican victory came when Jim Justice won a Senate seat in West Virginia, a race that was opened by the retirement of Democratic Senator Joe Manchin.
These victories reflect a broader trend of Republican strength across the nation, with the GOP appearing poised to take control of both the presidency and potentially the Senate, which could have significant implications for the legislative agenda in the next administration.
What’s at Stake
With Trump inching closer to the 270 electoral votes needed to win, and Harris facing an uphill battle in the remaining battlegrounds, the final outcome of the election seems increasingly likely to favor the former president. However, with several states still too close to call, it’s important to remember that these results are still preliminary, and the situation could change as more votes are counted.
The next few hours will be critical in determining whether Trump can secure a landslide victory or if Harris can mount a comeback. The key battleground states—especially Pennsylvania, Michigan, and Wisconsin—will be the final deciders in this high-stakes election.
As both sides await final results, the nation is gripped by the question of who will ultimately emerge as the 47th President of the United States.
