A harrowing incident unfolded at the Killeen Mall in central Texas on Saturday evening, leaving five people injured and the driver of a pickup truck fatally shot by police. What began as a police pursuit in the nearby city of Temple escalated into a chaotic scene at a busy shopping mall, just days before Christmas.
A Dangerous Pursuit Begins
The events that led to the tragedy started around 5 p.m. on Saturday when local authorities in Temple, Texas, received reports of a black pickup truck being driven erratically. The truck was reportedly swerving in traffic, prompting police to respond immediately. A state trooper quickly spotted the vehicle on westbound Interstate 14, about 25 miles from the city of Killeen, and attempted to initiate a stop.
However, the driver, later identified as the suspect, refused to pull over and instead sped off, leading officers on a high-speed pursuit. The chase eventually reached the Killeen area, where the driver took a dangerous turn, heading into the parking lot of the Killeen Mall.
A Devastating Crash Inside the Mall
As the suspect’s truck barreled through the mall parking lot, it crashed into the glass doors of the JCPenney store, plowing through the entrance and causing chaos inside the mall. Shoppers, many of whom were out buying gifts for the holiday season, were left scrambling for cover as the vehicle continued its erratic path through the store and the mall’s interior.
“We saw people running and shouting. It was terrifying,” one witness, who was inside the mall during the incident, later recalled. The truck drove several hundred yards through the mall before it finally came to a stop. Shoppers, including families with children, fled in panic as the vehicle caused havoc in the store and its surroundings.

Five Injured, Including Children and Elderly
The aftermath of the crash was devastating. To help the injured, emergency personnel hurried to the scene. 5 people were injured in the incident, according to authorities. The victims, who were between the ages of 6 and 75, were sent to local hospitals right away. Four of the injured were taken by ambulance, while the fifth, who had sustained less serious injuries, made their own way to the hospital.
Some of the victims were reported to have suffered serious injuries, and their conditions are being closely monitored. Given that the mall was crowded with holiday shoppers, the situation could have been far worse. It was a stroke of luck that the chaos didn’t result in more fatalities.
Police Confrontation and Fatal Shooting
As the situation unfolded, law enforcement officers from the Killeen Police Department, along with state troopers and even off-duty officers, arrived on the scene. According to Sgt. Bryan Washko, spokesperson for the Texas Department of Public Safety, the officers attempted to apprehend the suspect. However, the situation escalated quickly.
In a tense standoff, officers engaged in gunfire with the suspect, who was ultimately shot and killed at the scene. Washko later clarified that it was not an active shooter situation, as initially reported. Rather, the driver, who had been fleeing from law enforcement, had taken the dangerous decision to drive through the crowded mall during one of the busiest shopping times of the year.
Community in Shock
The tragic events left Killeen in a state of shock, especially as they unfolded just days before Christmas, a time when families gather to celebrate and shop for the holidays. The incident has shaken the local community to its core, with residents processing the shock and grief of what occurred.
Mayor Debbie Nash-King expressed her condolences and called the incident “profoundly troubling.” She thanked first responders for their swift actions in managing the situation and urged the community to support one another in the wake of the tragedy.
“I encourage everyone in our community to look out for one another, extend kindness, and prioritize safety during this season,” Mayor Nash-King said in a public statement.Killeen is strong, and together, we will support those impacted by this tragedy and move forward united.
The Investigation Continues
The Texas Rangers have taken over the investigation into the incident, with authorities working to piece together the details of the chase, the crash, and the events that led up to the suspect’s death. Authorities are also looking into why the suspect decided to drive into a crowded mall, a decision that could have led to far greater loss of life.
Killeen, with a population of around 150,000, is located about 70 miles north of Austin. The Killeen Mall, a major retail hub for the area, spans 63 acres and is home to numerous shops and restaurants, making it a popular destination for holiday shoppers.
As the community processes the events, it is clear that the impact of this incident will be felt for a long time, especially as families and victims continue to recover from the trauma. Killeen is determined to heal, with local leaders and citizens coming together to support one another during this difficult time.
