The FBI has determined that 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks of Bethel Park, Pennsylvania, is the perpetrator of the most recent attempt on the life of former President Donald Trump. The event happened just two days prior to Trump’s official nomination as the party’s nominee at the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee.
At a Butler rally, Crooks fired shots from a raised platform outside the venue, directly toward the platform where Trump was speaking. Agents of the Secret Service moved swiftly to neutralize Crooks after he fired several bullets. Blood was seen on Trump’s face as he was hurried off stage, though it was unclear at first if he was hurt.
These are Thomas Matthew Crooks’s five salient characteristics:
- Identity and Political Affiliation: In an attempted murder, Crooks was identified by the FBI as the gunman. He was registered as a Republican, according to voter registration data.
- Background: Bethel Park, Pennsylvania was home to Crooks. He won a $500 “star award” from National Math and Science Initiative after graduating from Bethel Park High School in 2022, according to Tribune-Review in western Pennsylvania.
- The Weapon: Crooks had a semiautomatic AR-15 weapon in his possession. A number of witnesses informed the authorities that they had seen him before the incident.
- Location: He was standing on a building’s roof around 130 yards away from the platform where Trump was speaking to the assembly.
- Aftermath: Following the incident, Secret Service agents shot and killed Thomas Matthew Crooks. His motivation for going after the 78-year-old former president and likely Republican nominee is still unknown to the authorities.

Regarding the shooting, what has the FBI said?
Special Agent in Charge Kevin Rojek of the FBI Pittsburgh field office asserts that while the crime scene is still under investigation, there is no ongoing threat from the incident. He was outside the premises; I’m not sure how he would have gotten there. And, according to Goldinger, we’ll need to ascertain how he arrived at that conclusion. He attested to the fact that one rally participant had perished in the event and that another was in critical condition in the hospital.
One attendee died and two others suffered severe injuries after “multiple shots (were fired) toward the stage from an elevated position outside the rally venue,” according to the US Secret Service. More information was not given, however the gunman was also dead.
Trump assassination attempt
During his address, businessman and presidential candidate Donald Trump took a bullet to the ear, splattering blood across his face. He was soon encircled by his security guards before he came out and pumped his fist while mouthing the words “Fight! Fight! Fight!” Later, he posted on his Truth Social site, saying, “My right ear was punctured by a bullet that I was shot with. There was a lot of blood.”
