Sony’s Concord Game Shut Down After Just Two Weeks
Sony’s latest multiplayer hero shooter, Concord, has been abruptly taken offline, just 14 days after its highly anticipated launch. The game, which debuted on August 23, 2024, for PlayStation 5 and PC, failed to attract a substantial player base and will see its servers go dark on September 6. The unexpected decision has left many wondering about the reasons behind the game’s swift demise and what it means for its future.
Why Was Concord Pulled?
Concord was designed to compete in the crowded hero shooter market, aiming to carve out a niche alongside popular titles like Overwatch and Valorant. However, despite its long eight-year development period, the game struggled significantly. It managed to sell fewer than 25,000 copies across all platforms, a disappointing outcome given the extensive resources invested in its creation. On Steam, the game’s peak concurrent players were a mere 697, a stark contrast to other successful titles.
Firewalk Studios’ game director, Ryan Ellis, addressed the matter in a blog post on the PlayStation site. Although there were portions of Concord that users connected with, he admitted that the game’s first release and other aspects fell short of expectations. According to Ellis, “We have decided to investigate options, including those that will better reach our players, and take the game offline beginning September 6, 2024.”
Refunds for Concord Buyers
Given the sudden termination of the game, Sony is giving all Concord buyers a complete refund. Refunds for customers who purchased the game via PlayStation Direct or the PlayStation Store will be handled using their original payment method. In the upcoming days, if you bought Concord from Steam or the Epic Games Store, you should receive a refund. A confirmation email will be sent out after the procedure is finished.
Customers who purchased physical copies from other sellers will have to deal with that merchant to handle the refund procedure. The game will no longer be accessible to players after a refund.
The Challenges Faced by Concord
Several factors contributed to Concord’s failure. Analysts suggest that the game’s $40 price tag was a significant drawback, especially in a market dominated by free-to-play alternatives. The saturation of the hero shooter genre also played a role, with established titles like Overwatch and Valorant making it difficult for new entries to stand out. Furthermore, critics pointed to issues with character designs, game aesthetics, and a lackluster marketing campaign as contributing factors to the game’s poor reception.
Future of Concord and Sony’s Live Service Ambitions
The rapid shutdown of Concord raises questions about Sony’s strategy for live service games. The company had previously planned to launch 12 live service titles but has since scaled back to just six. The cancellation of high-profile projects, including The Last of Us multiplayer game, suggests a reevaluation of their approach to live service games.
Firewalk Studios has hinted at potential future plans but has not provided details. For now, the focus will be on addressing the issues that led to Concord’s failure and exploring ways to better engage with players.
The swift closure of Concord serves as a stark reminder of the challenges facing game developers in a competitive market. Despite a promising start and an extensive development period, the game’s inability to attract a significant player base and its quick exit from the market highlight the difficulties of launching a new title in a saturated genre. As Sony and Firewalk Studios move forward, they will need to carefully consider player feedback and market trends to ensure the success of future projects.
