International Happiness Day is celebrated every year in the month of March. March 20 has been chosen to celebrate this day because equinox occurs on this day. Every year on 20 March, International Day of Happiness is celebrated across the world. Every year on this day the UN releases its Happiness Report. Through this day, emphasis is laid on giving priority to people’s mental health and happiness. Through the Happiness Report, an attempt is made to show how happy people are in which country. The purpose behind celebrating this day is that governments should work keeping in mind the happiness and well-being of their people in their strategies.
Started 11 years ago
Celebrating this day started 11 years ago, in 2013. In the year 2011, UN Advisor Jem Ilian proposed to celebrate Happiness Day in the UN General Assembly and the proposal to celebrate this day was also passed. After this, in the year 2012, the first general conference on Happiness was organized in the UN. In this conference, a proposal to celebrate International Happiness Day on 20 March was passed.
Bhutan had proposed
The proposal to celebrate International Happiness Day was made by the King of Bhutan. They passed a resolution to celebrate Happiness Day in the UN on 12 July 2012. This resolution was put forward by King Jigme Khesar Wangchuck of Bhutan. Actually, at that time Bhutan was opening its borders to foreigners and the king there believed that the happiness of the people does not depend on the economic condition of the country. In the 1970s, Bhutan was the first country in the world to give importance to people’s happiness more than GDP.
That is why happiness index is given great importance in Bhutan today. There GDP (Gross Domestic Product) is always placed after the Happiness Index. For this reason, Bhutan holds its place among the top 10 countries of the world in the Happiness Index and is considered to be the happiest country in Asia.
Why is International Happiness Day celebrated on 20 March?
