During the international climate talks, the World Meteorological Organization’s Deputy Chief made a statement that made people all over the world stop and think. Climate change, according to the WMO Deputy Chief, affects everything.
The World Meteorological Organization’s deputy head, Elena Manenkova, stated that we are rapidly approaching the time when global average temperature rises by 1.5 degrees Celsius from east to west. Regarding the validity of attribution studies, he stated that they are becoming more reliable. They lend many incidents a strong sense of credibility. But he claimed that everything is being affected more by climate change. Additionally, he stated that it is needless to attribute any event to climate change.
According to Manenkova, the planet is most likely very close to the long-term CO2 concentration limit of 1.5. The atmosphere has contained CO2 for thousands of years. It is not eliminated from the atmosphere by the natural cycle. The global community must make sure that CO2 concentrations stay below the thresholds required to keep the average temperature increase to 1.5 degrees Celsius.
Furthermore, the Earth’s surface temperature has increased by about 1.15 degrees Celsius worldwide. This has a direct connection to the carbon dioxide (CO2) that burning fossil fuels has released into the atmosphere since the beginning of the Industrial Revolution. According to the World Meteorological Organisation, 2023 will be the warmest year on record. Better long-term climate projections are urgently needed, and it would be far more advantageous to provide quantitative predictions, according to the WMO Deputy Chief.
