In less than two weeks, numerous state institutions have been attacked by gangs, who are increasingly coordinating their actions and choosing unlikely targets such as the Central Bank.
Following last week’s shootings by gangs at Haiti’s international airport, the US Embassy said it was halting all official travel to the country and on Sunday night urged all US citizens to depart as soon as possible.
Henry traveled abroad
The gangs say they want to remove Prime Minister Ariel Henry. Henry traveled abroad last week to try to drum up support for bringing a U.N.-backed security force into Haiti to stem the conflict with increasingly powerful crime groups.
The assaults are the brainchild of Jimmy Charizard, a crime syndicate leader and former elite police officer known as Barbecue. Capturing Haiti’s police head and government officials was the aim, he added, in order to stop Henry from coming back.
