Rohit Sharma’s golden journey as captain in IPL has ended. Mumbai Indians surprised everyone on Friday evening by appointing Hardik Pandya as their new captain for IPL 2024. However, the decision to remove Rohit, who made Mumbai champion five times, from the captaincy was taken during the World Cup 2023 itself.

Decision taken on Rohit’s captaincy in World Cup

Mumbai Indians had decided to remove Rohit Sharma from the captaincy during the World Cup 2023 itself. According to reports, Rohit was also told that he would not be the captain of Mumbai in IPL 2024. Mumbai had told Rohit that Hardik Pandya would take charge of the team in the 17th season of the Indian Premier League. Rohit had also agreed to play under Hardik’s captaincy.

Hardik had placed a condition

When Mumbai Indians first approached Hardik Pandya for trade, Hardik had put a condition before his old team. Hardik said that he would return to the Mumbai Indians team only when the reins of the team are handed over to him.

According to reports, this condition of Hardik was accepted by Mumbai. Only after this Hardik was traded to Gujarat Titans. That means the decision to remove Rohit from the captaincy was taken long ago.

Rohit Sharma became champion five times

Under his leadership, Rohit Sharma has guided the Mumbai Indians to five championships. Hitman became a member of the Mumbai team in 2011 and took over as team captain in 2013. This year, Rohit presented the team with the IPL trophy for the first time. Following this, Mumbai won the IPL championship in 2015, 2017, 2019, and 2020 while Rohit was captain.

Strong Hardik’s record as captain

The IPL captaincy record of Hardik Pandya is unparalleled. Under his captaincy, Hardik had led the Gujarat Titans to victory in their inaugural season. Under Hardik’s leadership, the team had advanced to the championship game the previous season. The Mumbai team has placed a wager on Hardik for this season for this reason.
