The six-time world champion boxer has not competed since suffering an Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) injury during the 2022 Commonwealth Games selection trials.
Olympic bronze medalist boxer Mary Kom has not ruled out the possibility of turning professional in the coming years as the seasoned boxer can no longer compete in amateur boxing due to age restrictions.
The six-time world champion boxer has not competed since suffering an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury during the 2022 Commonwealth Games selection trials. However, he has not announced his retirement yet. According to the rules, a boxer above 40 years of age cannot challenge in the amateur category and Mary Kom is now 41 years old.
After giving away medals to the medal winners at the Khelo India Para Games here on Monday, Mary Kom said, ‘If I speak from my heart, I still have the hunger to do something. I still want to compete and represent my country. But from this year onwards I will not be able to compete due to the age limit.
She said, ‘But I will still try to do something related to boxing. I can become a professional but I don’t know what I will do yet. I still have the passion to play for one to two years or even four years.’ Mary Kom said para-athletes are real heroes as they have to fight against the odds to make the country proud.
Mary Kom said, ‘I could not compete this year due to the age limit, I missed many competitions. I had a big injury, an ACL injury, and after recovery, I missed many competitions like the Commonwealth Games, Asian Games, and World Championships.
