The pinnacle of Mercedes-AMG’s roadster lineup is the SL 63 S E Performance, boasting a formidable 804bhp hybrid-assisted powertrain. Departing from the V12 tradition, this top-tier SL embraces a potent V8 engine coupled with a rear-mounted hybrid module derived from the C 63 and S 63 models. Housing a 200bhp e-motor and a two-speed transmission within the rear axle, this hybrid system, powered by a compact 6.1kWh battery, delivers instantaneous energy deployment and regeneration on its 400V electrical system.

While not designed for extensive all-electric driving, the SL 63 S E Performance showcases a 3.7kW onboard charger, providing approximately 8 miles of engine-off drive in e-mode. The power dynamics involve the M177 twin-turbocharged V8 engine generating 603bhp and 850Nm of torque, seamlessly integrated with a nine-speed automatic transmission. The result is an impressive 804bhp figure and a total system torque of 1,420Nm, albeit available in short bursts during over-boost scenarios, achieving a 2.9-second 0-62mph sprint and a top speed of 196mph.

Beyond raw power, the SL 63 S E Performance chassis is a marvel, featuring hydraulically cross-linked adaptive dampers with a semi-active anti-roll function. This innovative suspension system, coupled with traditional coil springs and rear-wheel steering, ensures precise handling across varying conditions. Carbon ceramic brakes, measuring 420mm at the front and 380mm at the rear, provide stopping power, enhanced by a four-stage regenerative braking system capable of accepting up to 100kW of recuperation.

Built on an aluminum-intensive chassis shared with the AMG GT, the SL accommodates two small seats and a folding fabric roof. Despite its compact footprint, the roadster’s weight, expected to surpass two tonnes, remains undisclosed. Visually, the flagship SL subtly distinguishes itself with red-backed badging and a rear-bumper-mounted charge port. Underneath, active aero elements aid in cooling around the rear axle.

As for the interior, the cabin remains unchanged, maintaining its luxurious design. While local pricing is pending confirmation, expectations place it above £200,000 upon its release next year. Additionally, anticipations are high for the SL 63 S E Performance powertrain to enter the new GT, expanding AMG’s high-performance hybrid range alongside the CLE 53. The relentless pursuit of power and innovation defines this latest addition to the AMG lineup, solidifying its status as the most powerful and quickest SL to date.
