Early prototypes of the clock showcased a more boxy design in gray, featuring a dot matrix LED display reminiscent of the now-discontinued Echo Dot with Clock. However, the team decided to abandon this design, as they felt it wouldn’t adequately communicate the product’s unique features, such as the motion sensor.
In their pursuit of a more user-friendly design, Nintendo created another prototype that looked similar to the final product we see today. This version had the alarm clock’s “brain” in the base, while the LCD screen and speaker were placed above. However, usability concerns arose, particularly for left-handed users, which prompted the final design to centralize all controls on the top for easier access.

Alarmo aims to transform your mornings into a delightful experience. Once the alarm goes off, a character from your selected game appears on screen, accompanied by gentle sounds unique to that game. If you remain in bed, the character will return periodically, making waking up an engaging experience. But that’s not all! Alarmo offers two distinct modes for waking up. Steady Mode gradually increases the alarm’s intensity the longer you stay in bed, while Gentle Mode maintains a consistent volume. When it comes to placement, Alarmo is designed for twin to king-sized beds. It should be placed with the face of the bed facing the sleeper, at arm’s length, and no more than eight inches above the bed. If you share a bed, it’s recommended to use Button Mode for a smoother experience.
