While the museum officially opened its doors on August 15th, a grand ribbon-cutting ceremony was held on October 2nd, which marked the 154th birth anniversary of Gandhi. The architecture of this 13,000-square-foot museum is inspired by Gandhi’s iconic twenty-four-spoke Charkha spinning wheel, which symbolizes his quest for India’s independence from colonial rule.
Preserving Gandhi’s Legacy
The Eternal Gandhi Museum is not only a cultural gem but also the sole Gandhi-related museum in the United States dedicated to preserving and promoting his legacy of nonviolent conflict resolution. Its mission is to carry forward the enduring legacy of Gandhi’s nonviolent struggle and inspire future generations with his teachings.

These include Mahatma Gandhi, Martin Luther King Jr., Nelson Mandela, Betty Williams, and others who dedicated their lives to peaceful causes. In front of the museum stands a statue of Mahatma Gandhi, a symbol of his enduring influence.
Special guests at the museum’s inauguration included Dr. Rajmohan Gandhi, Mahatma Gandhi’s grandson, and Isaac Newton Farris Jr., the nephew of Martin Luther King Jr. This gathering of influential figures highlights the global significance of Gandhi’s philosophy and the enduring resonance of his message of dignity, peace, and equality.

In his remarks, Dr. Rajmohan Gandhi emphasized the museum’s role in encouraging humanity to move beyond hatred, violence, and supremacy. He emphasized that both Gandhi and Martin Luther King Jr. symbolize dignity, peace, and equality in the world. - Gallery Two – Our Journey: Visitors learn about global peace leaders who followed in Gandhi’s footsteps, including Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Lech Walesa, Nelson Mandela, Betty Williams, and others who employed nonviolent conflict resolution in their work for social justice.
- Gallery Three – My Journey: Here, visitors are invited to reflect and contemplate how they can be catalysts for positive change in their own lives and communities. It encourages individuals to embody the famous quote, “Be the change you wish to see in the world.”
A Dream Realized Through Collaboration
The realization of the Eternal Gandhi Museum in Houston was made possible through collaboration and dedication. It began in 2016 when Atul Kothari initiated discussions with the Eternal Gandhi Multimedia Museum in Delhi, part of the Aditya Birla Group, to host a traveling exhibit in Houston. Subsequently, a civic asset was established in the form of the Eternal Gandhi Museum Houston.
Support for the project came from various quarters, including the Houston Endowment Foundation, Congressman Al Green, Fort Bend County Judge K P George, Dr. Anne Chao, and others who contributed generously to the museum’s construction. To date, approximately USD 8 million of the total construction budget of USD 10 million has been raised.
The architecture of the museum was designed by RDLR Architects, drawing inspiration from Gandhi’s spinning wheel. Exhibit design and installation were entrusted to Solid Light, Inc., known for creating interactive multimedia experiences.
