Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s meeting was called off. Actually, 2,500-year-old statues are the reason why the two leaders haven’t met. The British Museum is home to these sculptures. Greece has been pleading with Britain for the return of those statues. Britain has, however, stated that the statues should not be returned.

This issue has become a diplomatic dispute between the two countries. Lord Elgin, a British diplomat during his reign in Greece, removed the Parthenon from the temple and brought it to his country in the early 19th century.

He claimed that he brought these statues under permission, but Elgin could not prove this to be true, due to which even today there is controversy regarding these statues in Greece and Britain.

Greece is trying to bring the statues to Athens

Let us tell you that a possible loan deal for the statues is being discussed between the Government of Greece and the Chairman of the British Museum, George Osborne. Greece has been trying to bring these statues to Athens.

At the same time, a spokesperson of PM Rishi Sunak had said that there is no plan to return the statues.
